How-to: Modernize Retro Style

THE GIBSON GIRL. This up-do was popular in the 1890s. A frothy texture creates an angelic look for today's woman.

How to Style
  1. Spray on a texturizing product like Aquage Uplifting Foam and blow dry.
  2. Beginning at the bottom and working your way to the top, tease 1" sections of hair from root to the end and then flat iron.
  3. Be sure to spray each section with a heat protecting spray like RUSK Thermal Iron Spray.
  4. Brush hair out using a soft bristle brush.
  5. Sweep hair to the top of the head and loosely gather it and pin it in place.

How to Style
  1. Begin with a great cut from your salon professional. The sides should be shorter and graduating to a longer top. 
  2. Apply a small dollop of styling gel to damp hair and distribute well.
  3. Using a comb, carve in a deep part and smooth hair into place.
  4. Gently loosen waves on top with your finger for a a more casual feel.

How to Style
  1. Begin with a great cut from your salon professional. This cut is best when cut with either texturizing scissors or a razor to create a soft feminine feel. 
  2. Apply a small amount of a thickening cream to damp hair and distribute well.
  3. Comb hair into place and allow to dry naturally. 
  4. Use your fingers to loosen the shape.
Product Recommendation: 
A small amount of a texturizing wax like GK HAIR Shaping Wax can be used to play up separation on the ends.

How to Style
  1. Build up body in the hair by blowdrying a mousse in to the hair. 
  2. Curl 1-inch sections around a 1" ceramic curling iron and clip each curl.
  3. Allow hair to cool before removing the clips.
  4. Brush hair smoothly with a soft bristle brush.

How to Style
  1. Curl hair on a 1" ceramic curling iron.
  2. Use 1-inch horizontal sections and clip each curl and allow to cool.
  3. Brush the hair smoothly with a soft bristle brush allowing the hair to naturally form in waves.
  4. For longer hair, twist up and pin with bobby pins to create a faux bob.

  2. Beginning at the bottom and working your way to the top, blow dry hair in small sections.
  3. Pass over lightly where needed with a flat iron to eliminate frizz.

How to Style
  1. Distribute an egg sized amount of a volumizing foam like Aveda Phomollient through hair and blow dry.
  2. Curl hair on a 1 1/4" ceramic iron. Secure the curls with clips and allow the hair to cool.
  3. Brush the hair with a smoothing brush. 
  4. Twist and pin ends up to create desired length.

How to Style
  1. Pre-lighten color to pale yellow. Shampoo, condition, and dry.
  2. Apply fun color of choice and process. Shampoo, condition, and dry.
  3. Curl small sections on a 1" ceramic curling iron. Clip each curl and allow to cool.
  4. Lightly back brush hair, smoothing top into a roll.

  2. Part hair from ear to ear to separate the front and the back. 
  3. Create a deep side part in the front and sweep low across the forehead. 
  4. Twist remaining hair up high allowing curls to tousle and pin to secure.

How to Style
  1. Starting with dry hair, use a tapered curling wand and wrap 1-inch sections around wand.
  2. Lightly tease hair on the top to create height.
  3. Smooth back the top and side sections and pin to secure.
  4. Back comb ends for extra texture.

How to Style

How to Style
  1. Starting with clean, damp hair, part hair down the middle from front to back.
  2. Beginning low and tight in the nape on one side, plait a classic 3 strand braid and secure with a small elastic.
  3. Repeat on the opposite side.
  4. Drape the braids across the head and pin on the opposite sides and accessorize with flowers.
