Hair How-to Rocking Red

Hair & Makeup: Sherri Jessee, Guest Artist for PRAVANA Photo: Julia Kuzmenko

Slice a horizontal section across the fringe approximately from middle eyebrow to middle eyebrow.  Section should be between 1/16 to 1/8 thick depending on hair texture.  There should be a thin slice of hair left at the hairline.   Apply Pure Light power lightener mixed with appropriate developer, just off scalp through ends on foil.
Continuing at the same angle, slice another section ¼ inch under and 1/2 inch into the last foil.  Apply Pure Light mixture just off the scalp through the ends on foil.  Same section will be repeated on opposite side. Total foils: 7-9.

A glaze of  Pravana Chromasilk Creme Hair Color is placed on remaining hair.
Mix 1 oz 5N + 1 oz 5 R with  2 1/2 oz  Pravana Zero Lift Developer.
Once color is done processing and the hair in foil has lifted to desired level, shampoo, condition the hair with Pravana Color Ensure. This enriched formula will extend color protection and further revitalize and hydrate color-treated hair.

Dry the hair and overlay pre-lightened pieces with RED Chroma Silk Vivids and process 20 minutes. Shampoo and Condition.
Hair is micro crimped to create an interesting texture for a modern finish. Comparing the hair to fabric, this technique this will build bulk and morph fine silk strands into pliable corduroy.
Begin at the bottom and work your way up using small sections.
Pravana Super Shape Hair Spray provides heat protection and ultimate shine.

Hot Hair How-to: 4 Red Hot Looks

Hair and Makeup: Sherri Jessee; Photography: Roberto Ligresti; Model: Kara
Our hair is our finest accessory!
To make your very own daily fashion statement, diversify your style from one day to the next.  It is quite possible to get more than one look out of a short cut with the right products and tools.  Here, you will see how celebrity stylist, Sherri Jessee, created four completely different looks on one gorgeous model, Kara.

Hair and Makeup: Sherri Jessee; Photography: Roberto Ligresti; Model: Kara

Look One: Silky Smooth
To achieve Look One, Sherri Jessee first created the perfect short cut.  She used zig zags for a longer front and shorter back and texturizing scissors to simultaneously create both length and texture.

Look Two: Fantastic Fullness
For Look Two, a texturizing creme was evenly distributed and blown into the hair for thickness.

Look Three: Terrific Texture
To get Look Three: Sherri used a Gold N Hot crimping iron to create terrific texture on the top.  A nude lip was created with a Creme to Powder Foundation.

Look Four: Classic Waves
For Look Four: A generous amount of Oribe Rough Luxury Molding Paste is smoothed on and Sherri carved in a finger waved pattern similar to those seen in 1920's Hollywood. The makeup was amped up with the addition of Hourglass Extreme Sheen Lipgloss in Siren.

Begin with clean, dry hair.  Using a side part, create a Dutch braid gathering the hair only from the top and work your way to the back of the head. Secure the end of the braid with a clear elastic.
Repeat a Dutch braid on the opposite side and work your way to the back of the head.  Secure the end of the braid with a clear elastic.
Make the braid appear larger by using your fingers to stretch open and loosen the braid.
Gather the hair together to form a side pony tail and secure it low and tight close to the nape with an elastic. The clear silicone ones available at www.rickysnyc.com work great.
Divide the hair into three sections.
Fishbone braid each section and tie off the ends with a clear elastic band.
Take a small section of hair from the bottom of the braid and pull. This will create a rusching effect which makes the fishbone braid much looser and larger.
Twist and wrap each braid.

Form a spiral chignon and pin to secure.

Tell us about how your entry developed.

Summer of 2011, my mentor and dear friend, Helen Oppenheim recommended I do a Great Gatsby themed shoot. The movie was just going into production due out in theatres in February 2012. I was thrilled to get an amazing 10 page spread in KURV magazine which is a huge, gorgeous, high-fashion magazine!

I held tightly to the collection and did not post it on any social media or send to any editors in order to submit it for a NAHA Editorial entry. It was actually great timing because the movie was delayed and right at the time I received the NAHA Nomination, the film debuted in theaters!

Mentorship is vital to success.. who has mentored you over the years?

I have made it a point to continually learn from those around me. I have been so fortunate to have had a series of strong women to help guide my path. My very first boss was fantastic and from the very beginning encouraged me to travel and grow in the industry.
408601_4553994805533_49131428_n
Then, I had the good fortune to train directly under Louise Rusk to learn amazing cutting skills. A few years back Brooke Carlson encouraged me to increase notoriety in the industry and was in fact, the first person to encourage me to become a “name in the industry.” She encouraged me to enter NAHA, do TV work, and join Intercoiffure. Now, as a member of the Intercoiffure Artistic Team, I get to work with amazing ladies like Vivienne MacKinder and Mary Brunetti.

What is thrilling to me is the positive ripple effect of hard work:  As I grow in the industry, I have become a mentor  inspiring others to learn, grow, and succeed!

If a stylist could only take one class this year, which one would you suggest ?

The MODERN SALON Artist Session changed the direction of my career. Led by Maggie Mulhern, this 2 day training culminates in a photo shoot with fantastic Roberto Ligresti.

Hair runs in your family.. what is it like working with your daughter?

Oh my goodness. Every day is an absolute pleasure working with my daughter,  Amy Lauren!  We work in tandem on all the clients. My sister, Karen also works in the salon with us. I run a tight ship. We have so much fun but keep super busy. We try to provide great customer service with our motto, “be nice and do pretty hair.”

What has been the most amazing opportunity you have had in this industry so far?

I have been fortunate to have had so many amazing experiences that I find it difficult to name the most “amazing”. Would it be traveling to 5 continents, working New York Fashion Week, having my work published in hundreds of magazines, producing successful advertising campaigns, becoming a NAHA Finalist…or simply making a woman feel and look more beautiful than she ever has in her life? What a rewarding career! I work my ass off and love every minute of it!

Have you ever had an “OMG, what the hell am I doing here?!” moment? Share.

One of the most difficult moments I can remember was holding an international cutting and coloring training in Europe that was being translated simultaneously into 5 languages. Sometimes travel to other countries although exciting and new, can feel isolating with language barriers, time differences, and extreme work loads.

Words to live by…

“The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”

On a perfect day I spend it…..

Doing hair and makeup for a photo shoot!

What do people find most surprising about you?

I almost had a reality show set in my hair salon!

What is your next BIG goal?

Currently working on my new company, “Elegant, Organized Beauty™”… with my custom makeup bag, brushes, compacts, and cosmetics all available at my website,sherrijessee.com

I knew I was a Hair Nerd when….

I began cutting hair and doing makeup at age 11.
