From MODERN SALON: ARTIST SESSION Blog by Maggie Mulhern

ARTIST SESSION 6, Two Great Days

Average Rating:
We just wrapped up the best ARTIST SESSION ever! Ten fantastic hair designers from all over the United States and Canada came to New York to learn how to get involved in session work and use their amazing pictures to "Up Their Profiles."

ARTIST SESSION 6, Two Great Days
Artist Session attendees with guest speaker KIM VO

As always, day one was chock full of great speakers including Jayne Morehouse on Public Relations, David Lopez on the actual nuts and bolts of session work, Russell Halley on finding an agent and we even had a visit for the actual RICKY, founder of famed session artist dream stores.  Our own "exhibit A" and frequent ARTIST SESSION attendee, Sherri Jesse, offered tips on getting published internationally.

After learning more about how to choose a model, more than 60 models from top NY agencies showed up for our own casting where each artist selected a model for the actual photo session.

Day one ended with a super surprise FIELD TRIP! We met with Ted Gibson who gave us a tour of his iconic salon and shared more about celebrity hairdressing and why he gets $950 for a cut! I'm not spilling....but one of our artists even cried when she met TED!!!! He is our hero.

Day two, PHOTO SESSION DAY, was as magical as always. We set up at the breathtaking SPACE Studios in the Chelsea Market where famed model Imam was shooting across the hall. Most of the models showed up on time and our talented hair designers got busy. David Maderich applied gorgeous make up to complete the inspired finishes.

There was a minor interruption when KIM VO....yeah.... KIM VO... showed up to offer some words of encouragement and advice. Kim was in New York and had just wrapped up teaching 1000 professionals on the BEST OF BLONDING. When he told us that the best part of being a celeb is the swag, we just had to hand over the ARTIST SESSION GOODY BAG for him to play with!

Oh, yeah...THE GOODY BAG!!!! Incredible. We would like to thank Jayne Morehouse for bringing an FHI HEAT flat iron for each attendee and Ricky for bringing a special collection of clips, combs and other accessories in a gift bag. On top of that, each bag contained:

BIOIONIC I TOOLS Style Winder curling iron
CHI Flat iron
GHD midnight collection mini blow dryer gift set
MONROE BRUSHES (the teasing brush is everyone's fave)
SAM VILLA signature texturizing iron "TEXTUR"
SEDU blow dryer

ARTIST SESSION 6, Two Great Days

The best comment came at the end of day 2 from one of Roberto's photo assistants. While he has participated in hundreds of fashion shoots, he had never been to one of Modern's sessions.  "Wow," he said to me at the end of day 2. "I always wondered what the hair would look like if the hairdressers had as much time as they wanted. This is simply of my favorite shoots ever!"

We can't wait to start sharing the finished images once cover photographer Roberto Ligresti is finished organizing. It will be worth the wait.

I am so proud to have my work featured among the best in the beauty biz! This full page tutorial shares steps to get the look. Hair's How also has a great online site full of great education from all over the world.

Hair color must be perfect so, it is necessary to retouch model's re-growth with RUSK Deepshine Super Lightener.
The accessories were carefully planned before arriving on set. The first look showcased layers of jewelry while a second look featured over-sized flowers.

Each shape began with a strategically placed pony-tail using snag free elastics from Ricky's NYC.

This lovely one page story shows two of my favorite jeweled looks. New York Correspondent for Peluquerias Magazine, Helen Oppenheim's column is seen in SIXTY THREE countries! How exciting to have my work grace the pages of this beautiful publication.

Skin is perfected with Temptu Airbrush foundation.

I give thanks to the best beauty photographer in the business, Roberto Ligresti, and my gorgeous model,
Nadia, and to David Maderich, for being such a great makeup teacher!

Tips for Healthy Summer Hair

Summer can wreak havoc on your hair with exposure to sun and chlorine damage, and high humidity. To maintain gorgeous, healthy tresses all summer long, it is imperative to protect your hair with the correct products. I recently visited Daytime Tricities to share tips on taking care of your summer hair with Amy Lynn.
The correct products can help you maintain healthy hair in all seasons.
Chlorine Damage: Chlorine removes the natural protective oils from the hair and scalp causing a severe drying effect. Hair can become brittle, dry, and prone to breaks as well as splitting. Wet hair thoroughly with non-chlorinated water before entering a pool - your hair will absorb the water and will be less likely to absorb the chlorinated water. After a swim rinse your hair as soon as possible - club soda is actually knows to ease the adverse effects of chlorine. Condition your hair - it's important to use a deep conditioner at least once a week.
Deepshine Lustre is a 3 in One Miracle Product: it improves condition, shine, and gives sunscreen protection!

Sun Damage: UV rays can be harmful to the hair as well as the skin. Some signs of sun damaged hair would be faded hair color, and dry, brittle hair. There are amazing products on the market that will protect your hair from the sun and will ALSO cut down on the frizziness we see from humidity.  RUSK has the amazing DEEPSHINE LUSTRE which is a three-in-one, miracle product.  Whether you're looking to repair already damaged hair or protect hair - this is the product for you.  It infuses the hair with moisturizing marine extracts, natural lipids, strengthening proteins and protective UVB inhibitors.
Rusk Deepshine Oil is a popular argan enriched oil.
Humidity: Humidity is known to ruin our hair during the summer months. What's actually happens is that as humidity increases, the hair absorbs moisture and becomes bigger, causing frizziness. Rusk Deepshine Oil can help seal the cuticle, and block humidity, thus preventing bad hair days.
